Károly Kárpáti

Károly Kárpáti [ ka ː ka ː roj rpa ː ti ] ( born July 2, 1906 in Eger, † September 23, 1996 in Budapest) was a Hungarian wrestler and coach.

Life

Kárpáti started early with the rings and already won in 1925 his first Hungarian title. The first Hungarian top wrestler he worked intensively with the free style and became the "father " of the later in this style so successful Hungarian wrestler. He participated in 1927 with great success at international championships. He often met on German wrestler. In 1936, he fought against, for example, the Munich Wolfgang Ehrl at the Olympic Games in Berlin in 1936 for the gold medal in the lightweight, freestyle and won just on points.

Kárpáti was Jewish. It has therefore been interned during World War II by the Nazis in a concentration camp in Ukraine, but luckily survived. After the war he was for many years coach of the Hungarian national team wrestler and written several textbooks on the rings.

National success

After winning the first Hungarian championship in 1925 and 1936 followed another eleven titles in both styles.
