Károly Németh

Károly Németh [ ka ː ne ː roj mɛt ] ( born December 14, 1922 in Páka in Lenti, Hungary, † 12 March 2008) was a Hungarian communist politician and former president.

Németh already occurred in 1945, the Communist Party, which renamed itself in 1948 in the United Socialist Workers' Party. After a one-year period as a candidate In 1957 he was a member of the Central Committee ( CC) of the Hungarian Socialist Workers' Party ( USAP ). From 1958 to 1988 he was a deputy of the National Assembly.

From 1960 to 1965 he was secretary of the Central Committee of the USAP. Subsequently, he was First Secretary of the Party Leadership in Budapest. Between 1970 and 1989 he was a member of the Politburo of the Central Committee of the USAP. In 1974 he returned as a secretary back in the Central Committee. In 1985, he was Deputy Secretary-General of the Central Committee of the USAP, and thus representative of János Kádár as party leader.

Németh was on 25 June 1987 as a successor of Pál Losonczi Chairman of the Presidential Council and thus President of Hungary. After a little more than a year in office, he was succeeded in this office on 29 June 1988 by Brúnó Straub.
