Karum (trade post)

Karum ( n, Pl: Karu ) denotes an Assyrian berth or port. It is also used for offices of merchants ( tamkarum ). Many of them were located abroad. In Old Assyrian Karu time lay about in Kültepe ( Kaniš ) alisar Höyük (possibly Amkuwa ) Boğazkale ( Hattus ) and Acemhöyük in Anatolia, more were in the not yet identified locations Turhumit and Purušḫanda. The Karu were under its own management, the BET Karim. This was also engaged in trade, but also could take action against the debtor, seal houses or even seize.
