Kasatochi Island

Kasatochi Iceland is an uninhabited volcanic island in the Andreanof Islands, which belong to the Aleutian Islands. The 2.4 km long island is located 15 km north- west of Atka Iceland.

1802, the island was first reported by Gavriil Andreevich Sarytschew as Kosatochyey in a chart.

Volcano

The Island dominant 288 m high stratovolcano has a 750 m -wide summit crater with a crater lake. The majority of the volcanic building is, however, from a submarine basaltic and andesitic rocks from the back.

The Kasatochi volcano last erupted in 2008.

Explosive eruption in 2008

From 7 August 2008, a relatively significant explosive eruption ( VEI4 ). The main part of the eruption column rose to about 10,000 m and the peak reached about 15,000 m. Present biologists had to leave in a hurry the island.

The last activity observed prior to this outbreak had occurred in 1899.
