Kashveti Church

The Kaschweti Church (Georgian ქაშვეთის ეკლესია ) is a Georgian Orthodox church in Tbilisi, Rustaveli street Gamsiri. It was built in 1904-1910 on the site of the old smaller church. The old building was severely damaged in the 19th century. The then head of the Church Markos Tqemaladse decided to build a new church. The church was designed by the architect L. Bilfeldt. Bilfeldt used when configuring the Samtavisi Cathedral as a model. The rich reliefs of Kaschweti Church was created by the Georgian architect Neopite Agladse.

The name means stone Kaschweti birth and refers to the legend of the most revered saints in Georgia Dawit Gareja. This had been accused by a pregnant woman to be the father of her child, and had then prophesied that the woman will give birth to a stone, which was also done.
