Kaspar von Silenen

Kaspar of silenes ( * ca 1467 in the canton of Uri, † August 5, 1517 in Rimini) was from 1506 to 1517, the first commander of the papal Swiss Guard ( Praefectus Helveticae Custodiae et Corporis Domini Nostri Papae ).

At the request of Pope Julius II, he moved with 150 Swiss mercenaries to protect the Vatican in Rome (22 January 1506). Once there they received the blessing of the Pope.
