Kassari

Kassari ( German Kassargen ) is an island in the Baltic Sea. It is located south of the second largest Estonian island of Hiiumaa. Kassari belongs to the Moon Sound Islands.

Description and History

The total area of the island is 19.3 km ². The coastline is 59 km long. The island was only about 3,000 years ago from the sea. The highest point is today at 15 m above sea level.

Kassari is connected to Hiiumaa by two dams.

Kassari was first mentioned in 1564 as Kaskesara documented. Today it administratively belongs to the rural community Käina. On Kassari permanently about 300 people live in the four villages Esiküla, Kassari, Orjaku and Taguküla. In Orjaku located since the early 19th century, a fixed port, which now serves as a marina. A local history museum tells the history of the island.

On the island there is a Finnish writer Aino Kallas (1878-1956) commemorative museum. Kallas was Kassari closely verbundenund used her summer stays on Kassari and Hiiumaa for its belletristic work.
