Kastav

Kastav (Italian Castua ) is a town in the Primorje - Gorski Kotar, Croatia.

The population is 10,440 ( 2011 census ). Kastav is located 11 km west of Rijeka to 378 m on the road Rijeka -Trieste.

History

  • Since the 12th century Kastav was under the rule of the Counts Devinski ( from Duino ).
  • 1465 Kastav came under Habsburg rule.
  • 1630 Kastav came under Jesuit rule, which ended in 1773.
  • 1700, the first school was founded ( first Croatian school in Istria).
  • 1773 Kastav came under Habsburg rule.
  • 1863 there was a cholera epidemic in the city.
  • 1866 during the Illyrian movement was the Čitalnica ( the reading house ) founded (the first in Istria).
  • After the First World War Kastav belonged to the Kingdom of SHS.
  • 1997 Kastav got the status of a municipality.

The church ruin of Kastav It is framed by the legend to the construction in the 17th century by the Jesuits and the residents who had to help without pay. The prayer of a widow to the Jesuits, to be freed from it in order to seek to feed their children, was answered by those with strokes of the cane.
