Kastel-Staadt

Bernkastel- Staadt is a municipality in the Trier -Saar castle in Rhineland- Palatinate. It belongs to the municipality Saar castle.

Geographical location

Kastel lies on a plateau high above the Saar. To the local community of the district Staadt heard in the valley of the Saar against Serrig. The village is located about nine kilometers north of Mettlach Saarland and four kilometers south of the Saar castle and is connected through the provincial road 131 to the national road network.

History

In Bernkastel- Staadt there was an oppidum of Treverians. The Romans built probably before the time of turning on the high plateau an almost impregnable fortress. Finds from the Celtic and Roman periods are numerous documented in the vicinity. The place Kastel was first mentioned in documents in 1098.

On July 18, 1946 Bernkastel- Staadt was attached together with a further 80 municipalities in the counties registers and the Saar castle in February 1946 separated from the rest of the French occupation zone Saar, which no longer was under the Allied Control Council at the time. On June 6, 1947 this territorial carve-out was taken back up to 21 communities again so came Bernkastel- Staadt to the 1946 newly formed state of Rhineland -Palatinate.

Parish council

The local council in Bernkastel- Staadt consists of eight council members, who were elected at the municipal election held on 7 June 2009 by majority vote, and the honorary mayor as chairman.

Attractions

The Klause Kastel is in the cliff beaten by monks from sandstone refuge on a plateau above the Saar Valley.

Not far from Klause is a natural already populated by Celts and on three sides by red sandstone and the fourth protected with a wall in front of enemies attachment ( oppidum ).

Above the Hermitage is the cemetery of honor Kastel to the fallen of World War II.

Near the hermitage stands the old church of St. John the Baptist, who was the parish church until 1442 with far reaching catchment area. Its tower dates from the 12th and the nave from the 13th century.

The premium trail " dream loop " is a rocky path that winds around the plateau.

The church stands in the middle of a cemetery, whose enclosure was designed by Karl Friedrich Schinkel. Above the entrance to the cemetery is a Pietà to see.

Schinkel also designed the grave chapel of John of Bohemia, which was Friedrich Wilhelm IV in order. It is located near the Church of St. John the Baptist. Schinkel used for the construction of the ruins of the hermitage Kastel, which was built around 1600 and was in 1833 in the possession of Frederick William IV passed. The body of John of Bohemia, had received the Friedrich Wilhelm IV of Jean -François Boch in Mettlach, located since 1946 in Luxembourg; the classical sarcophagus is empty ever since. In gratitude for transfer of remains of John of Bohemia Friedrich Wilhelm IV Boch endowed with a fountain, whose figure was designed by Schinkel.

The grave chapel is one of the important late works of Schinkel and is considered a major example of Neoclassical Romanesque Revival. Schinkel decided not to change the resulting ground floor of the ruin with his neo-Gothic ribbed vault from the 17th century, and provided here only for a colorful window glazing. The new masonry he designed along the lines of already existing. The upper floor was provided with a round-arched frieze and windows in the form of triple arcades; on the north side of a bell tower was set up in Italian style.

In the immediate vicinity of the church of St. John the Baptist also created Schinkel the viewpoint " Elise seat " at the haunt of Princess Elisabeth of Bavaria. City consumption in 1840 also set up the so-called Schinkel school, which was, however, may not be designed by Schinkel.
