Katajanokka

Helsinki Strand ( swedish Skatudden ) is a branch (Finnish osa - alue ) and a district ( kaupunginosa ) Helsinki, Finland with almost 4100 inhabitants. Helsinki Strand is located on a peninsula in the eastern part of downtown Helsinki. Since the 19th century, the peninsula is separated by a channel from the mainland and is reached by four bridges.

The south side of Helsinki Strand is taken from the harbor. In the 1980s, the movement was shifted to other ports and the Port Magazine have been converted for other purposes. Since the terminal in Helsinki Strand is only used for passenger traffic. From here you can catch ferries to Stockholm and Tallinn. The Finnish icebreaker fleet is in the summer on the north shore of Helsinki Strand anchor.

The rest of the neighborhood consists mainly of residential areas and green spaces. The western part of Helsinki Strand was built in the Art Nouveau style in the early 20th century and is today an attractive residential area. In the eastern part was until 1975 a shipyard. After its closure, the site was transformed into a modern residential area.

The most famous landmark Katajanokkas is the most visible Uspenski Orthodox Cathedral, which stands on a rock on the western edge of the peninsula. Also located on Katajanokka the Finnish Ministry of Foreign Affairs ( Merikasarmi ) and numerous hotels. Until 2002, there existed also a prison, but this was restored and converted into the Best Western Hotel Katajanokka with " prison " atmosphere.
