Katalin Szili

Katalin Szili [' kɒtɒlin ' sili ] ( born May 13, 1956 in Barcs ) is a Hungarian lawyer and politician from the southern Hungarian city of Pécs. She was 2002-2009 President of Parliament.

Szili lost at the age of 12 years, her left hand when a hand grenade from World War II exploded in her hands.

Szili studied law and political science at the University of Pécs. Until 1992, she worked in various positions as a lawyer.

She was a member of the MSZMP ( Hungarian Socialist Workers' Party ). In 1989, she joined the MSZP ( Hungarian Socialist Party ). From 1997 to 2001 President of the party in Baranya county. From 2000 to 2004 she was Deputy Vice President of the party.

Between 1994 and 1998 Szili worked as Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry of Environmental Protection. Since 1994 she has been four times elected to parliament (Hungarian Országgyűlés ). At every election, she won the direct mandate in Pécs constituency. Between 1998 and 2002, she was Vice President of the Parliament. Since May 2002 she has been the President of Parliament.

Szili was named on 15 April 2005 as the candidate of the MSZP for the Succession of President Ferenc Mádl. So it looked as if it could take over the office of president in Hungary for the first time a woman. In the election, held on 6 and 7 June 2005, but did not support the junior coalition partner, the liberal SZDSZ, her because she could not embody the non-partisanship of the president as a party politician. The SZDSZ did not participate in the election. Szili defeated in the third round against the former president of the Hungarian Constitutional Court, Laszlo Solyom, who was supported by the opposition.

It was regarded as the most popular politician of the Socialist Party. As outgoing President of the Parliament in May 2009, she ran for the office of mayor of Pécs. The election was won by the opposition candidate of Fidesz, Zsolt Pava, with 66%.

In 2010 she founded a new party called Szociális Unio. This went out of their membership in the Socialist, she joined in October 2010 from the fraction. Since then, she sits as an independent MP in Parliament.

Szili is widely referred to as recognized and skilled politician. She is married and has two adopted children.
