Kate Barry (photographer)

Kate Barry ( born April 8, 1967 in London, † December 11, 2013 in Paris) was a British photographer.

Life and work

Kate Barry was the daughter of actress and singer Jane Birkin and the composer John Barry. She was the eldest of three daughters Birkin, half-sister of Charlotte Gainsbourg and Lou Doillon. After her parents separated in 1967, she grew up under the care of her mother and her partner Serge Gainsbourg, until it in turn separated from each other.

First, they aimed at the professional fashion designer and began studying at the Ecole de la chambre Syndicale de la couture parisienne. However, you ill with alcohol and drug addiction. After the birth of her son Roman she freed herself in a London specialist clinic of their dependence. Following the example of Alcoholics Anonymous in 1993, she founded the organization Apte ( Aide et prévention of toxico - dépendances par l' entraide ).

At the age of 28 years, she turned to photography. She portrayed numerous actresses and actors, including her sister Charlotte, Elsa Zylberstein, Audrey Tautou and Catherine Deneuve. For fashion magazines and newspapers, such as Vogue, Elle, Paris Match, Le Figaro Madame, she created portraits and fashion photographs. She photographed for advertising campaigns. Shots of her grace the cover of CDs of Calogero and Carla Bruni. They also photographed outside of the fashion world, for example, portrayed landscapes and the faces of the workers on the market of Rungis.

Kate Barry never acquired French citizenship. She loved the rain and the fog in her native England and Brittany. Together with Jean Rolin she wrote an autobiographical book about the town of Dinard: Dinard. Essai d' autobiography immobilière.

In September 2013, the gallery opened in Paris Cinéma with the exhibition Point of View, which showed all the facets of the work of Kate Barry. The gallery owner Anne -Dominique Toussaint had Kate Barry met on the set of shots for the film Jacky ou le royaume des filles from Riyadh Sattouf where Barry had photographed on the set. Toussaint wrote about Barry:

On December 11, Kate Barry died from a fall from the window of her Paris apartment on the 4th floor. The apartment was locked from the inside, and she had been alone in it.

The French Minister of Culture Aurélie Filippetti praised in her obituary ...:
