Kate Nelligan

Kate Nelligan ( born March 16, 1950 in London, Ontario as Patricia Colleen Nelligan ) is a Canadian actress.

Life and achievements

Nelligan graduated from the London South Secondary School in London ( Ontario), she studied at the University of Toronto, but there was no conclusion. Instead, they moved to London's Central School of Speech and Drama. In 1973 she made her debut in a play, and shortly thereafter she played her first major role in a television series, The Onedin Line. In the television series Great Performances, she starred in the episode The Arcata Promise ( 1970) opposite Anthony Hopkins. For her role in the television film Measure for Measure (1979 ) on a play by William Shakespeare in 1980, nominated for the BAFTA Award. In the horror film Dracula '79 (1979 ) she appeared alongside Frank Langella, Laurence Olivier and Donald Pleasence.

In the British mini TV series Thérèse Raquin (1980 ) she played the lead role for which she was nominated for the 1981 BAFTA Television Award. In 1983 she moved to New York City, where it occurs in numerous plays. From 1983 to 1989 she was nominated four times for a Tony Award.

In the film drama One morning in May (1983 ) Nelligan played the lead role, just as in the wartime drama Eleni (1985 ), in which played alongside John Malkovich and Nelligan Linda Hunt. For her starring role in the film The White Room (1990 ) she was nominated for the 1991 Genie Award.

In the film drama Frankie & Johnny ( 1991) Nelligan played alongside Michelle Pfeiffer, Al Pacino and Hector Elizondo. For this role she won the 1991 National Board of Review Award and the 1992 BAFTA Award. For her role in the film drama The Prince of Tides (1991 ) with Barbra Streisand and Nick Nolte was nominated for an Oscar in 1992. For her guest appearance on the television series Avonlea - The girl from the city in 1992, she was nominated for an Emmy Award and won the 1993 Gemini Award. Snatched for her role in the TV movie The Mother (1994 ) she was nominated in 1996 for the Gemini Award. Further nominations for this award she received in 2001 for her starring role in the TV movie Blessed Stranger: After Flight 111 (2000 ) and 2004 for her starring role in the mini television series Human Cargo ( 2004). For her supporting role in the film drama The end of all dreams (1995 ), she won the 1996 Genie Award.

Nelligan was temporarily married to the composer Robert Reale and has a son. She lives in Manhattan.
