The Katherine River is a river in the north of the Australian Territory Northern Territory.

Geography

River

The source area is located east of Kakadu National Park on the southern slopes of Mount Gilruth. From there, the river initially the gorge Katherine Gorge flows south turning later to the West in the Nitmiluk National Park to flow through. From there he sets his running away to the southwest by Katherine and finally, together with the Flora River north of the Flora River Nature Park the Daly River.

History

The first European explorers and was named after John McDouall Stuart, the river in 1862 after the second daughter of the financier of the discovery expedition, John Chambers, named.

End of January 1998 caused the cyclone Les severe weather, which could increase the flow by more than 20 meters and flooded a large part of Katherine. In another flood on 6 April 2006, the emergency has been declared as the river at the bridge of the Stuart Highway Katherine again reached a level of almost 19 m.
