Kathleen Battle

Kathleen Battle ( born August 13, 1948 in Portsmouth, Ohio, USA) is an American soprano.

Life

Kathleen Battle was born as the youngest of seven children and grew up in relatively simple social conditions. It has already been brought up early on the traditional African-American gospel music by her mother, and eventually studied at the College - Conservatory of Music Cincinnati, Ohio, which she left in 1971 with a Master 's Degree. Then worked as a music teacher and made his debut in 1972 as a professional singer at the Spoleto Festival under the baton of Thomas Schippers. Five years later she sang at the Metropolitan Opera in Richard Wagner's opera Tannhäuser. In the following years she sang, inter alia, with the Vienna Philharmonic, Berlin Philharmonic, the New York Philharmonic Orchestra and the Salzburg Festival. Among the highlights of her career counts her collaboration with Herbert von Karajan, under whose management it in Mozart's Coronation Mass in St. Peter's Basilica in Rome before Pope John Paul II (1985 ), as a soloist in the New Year's Concert of the Vienna Philharmonic (1987) and as Zerlina in Don Giovanni in Salzburg (1987 /88) could be heard.

Her repertoire includes arias by Bach, Handel, Mozart, Rossini, Franck and Fauré. For her work she has been five times awarded the Grammy Award.

One of their most famous interpretations is the song Lovers, composed by Shigeru Umebayashi, she has sung for the movie House of Flying Daggers. With Wynton Marsalis, they recorded the album Baroque Duet for Sony BMG, which was published in 1992. Followed in 2002 by Classic Kathleen Battle. She also worked for recordings with Al Jarreau and with Cyrus Chestnut together.
