Kathleen Rockwell

Kathleen Eloise Rockwell (* 1876 in Junction City, Kansas, † 1957) was an American vaudeville dancer and singer, known as " Klondike Kate" acquired a legendary reputation during the Alaska Gold Rush in 1900. About her birth date, there are different information.

Biography

Born in Kansas Kate Rockwell grew up in Spokane ( Washington). In 1899 she followed the call of the Klondike gold rush to Alaska.

Initially she worked as a dancer in Whitehorse, then in Dawson City. Here she met Alexander Pantages, who would become one of the most successful theater operator in the United States and Canada later. The two entered into a fabled home and business partnership.

With the waning of the Gold Rush, Kate Rockwell moved to British Columbia, where she ran a movie theater, and later to Oregon. You could not build on their success in Alaska, but knew how to make money with their memories, being hard on their legend wove.

Kate Rockwell died in 1957 as one of the last witnesses of the gold rush. She was the most famous of a number of women who had the nickname " Klondike Kate".
