Kathryn Patricia " Kay " Hire ( born August 26, 1959 in Mobile, Alabama, United States) is an American astronaut.

Hire In 1981 he received a bachelor's degree in engineering and management from the United States Naval Academy in 1991 and a Master in Space Technology from Florida Institute of Technology.

In the United States Navy Hire was founded in 1982 designed to Marinefliegerin. She participated in global airborne oceanographic research missions. She worked as an instructor at the Mather Air Force Base in California. Hire is the first woman of the American military, which was assigned to a flight crew for combat operations. In 1993 she flew aboard a P-3 Seeaufklärers. When Operation Enduring Freedom and the Iraq War, it was used in the command staff of the U.S. Navy.

Astronauts activity

From May 1989 Hire worked as an engineer at the Kennedy Space Center and later for Lockheed. In December 1994, she was selected by NASA as an astronaut contender. After training as a mission specialist, she worked as a liaison officer ( CAPCOM ) in the control center. She worked in the direction of the Astronaut Office Shuttle Avionics Integration Laboratory for the payload of the shuttle and the equipment of crews.

STS -90

On April 17, 1998 Hire started as a mission specialist aboard the space shuttle Columbia on the Spacelab mission STS -90. The Neurolab 16-day mission served mainly the study of the effects of weightlessness on the brain and nervous system.

STS -130

On 5 December 2008 to participate in the mission STS -130 was announced as a mission specialist. The launch took place on 8 February 2010, which landed on 22 February.
