Kathy Dunderdale

Kathleen Mary Margaret ( " Kathy " ) Dunderdale ( born February 1952 in Burin, Newfoundland ) is a Canadian politician. She's since December 3, 2010 Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador. Since 2003, she represents as the MPs constituency Virginia Waters in the House of Newfoundland and Labrador and has held several ministerial positions in the cabinet of Danny Williams. After Williams' resignation, she took over the presidency of the Progressive Conservative Party of Newfoundland and Labrador.

Biography

Dunderdale studied at Memorial University of Newfoundland in 1972 and got to her future husband, a cargo ship captain know. As a housewife, she moved to her two children, while he was on the high seas. Later she was active in local politics and led to an action committee that could prevent the closure of a fish processing plant in Burin. In addition, she was a social worker and member of the school board. Dunderdale was a member of Burin on, including several years as Vice Mayor presided and the first woman to municipal association of Newfoundland and Labrador. In 1995 she moved to the provincial capital of St. John's.

As a candidate of the Progressive Conservatives came Dunderdale 1993 on elections to the Chamber of Deputies of Newfoundland and Labrador and defeated the then Liberal Prime Minister Clyde Wells. Ten years later, she tried again and won against mining and energy minister Walter Noel. After the elections, Danny Williams took them up in his government and made it to the Minister of Innovation, Trade and Rural Development. 2006 saw a reshuffle and Dunderdale took over the areas of natural resources, forestry and agriculture. On 31 October 2010 Dunderdale was appointed Deputy Prime Minister and also head of the Office for Gender Equality, while continuing exercised their office as Minister of Natural Resources. In March 2010, she represented Williams when he had to undergo heart surgery.

Dunderdale came on 3 December 2010 on the follow- Williams' as Prime Minister of Newfoundland and Labrador and is the first woman to hold this office. On April 2, 2011, they also took over the party chairmanship. In the elections on 11 October 2011, the Progressive Conservatives lost, although some seats, but were able to hold the absolute majority.
