Kaukura is an atoll of the Tuamotu Archipelago in French Polynesia.

Geography

The nearest atoll Arutua is 16 km east. The atoll is 48 km long and 16 km wide. There is only one navigable access to the sea. Geographically, the atoll is one of the Palliser Islands, administratively to the municipality Arutua.

The only village of the atoll, Raitahiti is located, on the main island Tuteva in the northwest. There is also the airfield was opened in 1994.

Tourism has supplanted the traditional fishing as the main industry.

History

The atoll was discovered in 1722 by the Dutch captain Jacob Roggeveen.
