History

The institution was established on 30 April 2004. It was founded by the Department of National Minorities and Emigration of the Government of the Republic of Lithuania and the municipal council of the city of Kaunas. The building of the multinational Kaunas center was officially opened on 18 November 2004. By decision of the Government of the Republic of Lithuania, the rights of the business partner were handed over to the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Lithuania since January 1, 2010 after the reorganization of the Department of National Minorities and Emigration. From the beginning, the establishment is headed by the Director Dainius Babilas.

Activity

The Office is organized annually around 70 cultural events: concerts, art shows, evening entertainment, poetry hours, presentations of culinary arts heritage and books. It also organizes training courses and seminars for senior, leading, active and young members of the communities of national minorities. The decor invites scientists and experts to a scientific conferences, seminars and discussions on the history, activities, current issues and problems, integration processes. The management of the institution collects, systematizes and disseminates the material on national minorities, helps scientists, students and students in conducting research, preparing speeches and articles for the press, takes part in television and radio broadcasts.

Since 2006 the establishment organizes the annual festival of the people of Lithuania "Bridges of Cultures" - one of the biggest cultural events of national minorities in Lithuania. In the festival give the best art collectives of national minorities in Lithuania concerts, presentations of trades are presented and organized creative actions of the children. The festival is traditionally organize in the center of Kaunas city under the open sky.

Since 2006, the facility regularly organizes photography projects in which work together professional photographers with the communities of national minorities and students of Lithuanian schools to prepare exhibitions where different cultures are presented. Later on, these exhibitions are presented in various cultural centers, galleries, schools, shopping centers and other public facilities in Lithuania.

The facility works closely with non-governmental organizations of national minorities ( German, Armenian, Belarusian, Polish, Roma, Russian, Tatar, Ukrainian, Jewish and others). In the premises of the institution always find events of the communities of national minorities, meetings and repetitions of art collectives instead.

This is the only facility in the region Kaunas with such type of activity. A similar device in Vilnius is called the House of National Communities.

International cooperation

The device initiates and organizes international projects under EU programs "Learning throughout life " ( " Grundtvig ", " Leonardo da Vinci "), " Entrepreneurial Youth". It maintains relations with the partners of the business abroad: Germany, Great Britain, Norway, Iceland, among others It participates in other organizations' projects. The staff of the administration of the institutions makes their training in international training courses and seminars, they go to conferences, professional practices, exchange visits of youth and finding visits to EU programs.
