Kausia

The causia ( gr καυσία ) was in ancient Greece a cap of Macedonian origin, which was worn by men.

Description and Use

The causia consisted of felt and was a beret -like, flat cap similar to a Basque cap, which was used as a sunscreen. When the Macedonians, he served as a prestige object and was often richly decorated. Later they used it only as a cheap commodity, which was worn by all classes of society. Greek and Macedonian soldiers wore the causia often in their spare time.

History

This headgear is originally from Macedonia. It existed since the 4th century BC and spread with the campaigns of Alexander the Great in Greece and the Middle East. In the 2nd century BC the causia was used also in Italy and in Rome, especially from the lower social classes.

In total, over 750 illustrations of causia have survived to the present day.
