Kavieng

Kavieng is a city on the island of New Ireland in Papua New Guinea with 11,560 inhabitants and the capital of the New Ireland Province.

Kavieng is located in the north ( North Cape) of the island of New Ireland, the main island of the homonymous province. Its location on the flow between the open waters of the Pacific and the Bismarck Sea has created a diverse marine life. Kavieng has a small airport and a daily service in the capital, Port Moresby. The Boluminski Highway leads from Kavieng 264 km on the east coast of the island along to Namatanai.

The population increase in Kavieng is great - the population of the island's capital increased almost killed three times since 1980.

Nevertheless Kavieng is still described as a typical South Sea Port as from a novel by Somerset Maugham, small, sleepy and peaceful.
