The unclad machines (so-called "Naked Bikes" ) existed in Germany from 1991 to 2000 in the versions 550, 750, 1100 cm ³, which, visually reminiscent of the Z models from the 1970s. They were all air-cooled 4- cylinder 4- stroke engine.

The name Zephyr takes on a wind deity of Greek mythology reference.

The internal name of the series with the model name " Zephyr " was " ZR ". In Japan there is still a Zephyr X 400, a 4-in -1 carries the tank decor of the first Z1 and exhaust system. Because of the mostly Germanized pronunciation of the name Zephyr, the series had with connoisseurs the nickname " C4".
