Kay A. Orr

Kay Auonne Orr ( born January 2, 1939 in Burlington, Iowa) is an American politician. She was from 1987 to 1991 Governor of the State of Nebraska.

Life

Kay Orr was born as Kay Auonne Stark. After school, she attended the University of Iowa. In 1963, she moved to Lincoln, Nebraska, where she made very quickly in the Republican Party base. Soon she was in Nebraska, a known political figure. Between 1976 and 1988 she was the delegate to all national conventions of their party. Between 1981 and 1986 she served as Minister of Finance ( Treasurer ) of Nebraska.

Policy

In 1986, Kay Orr was elected the 37th Governor of Nebraska, where they deal with 53:47 percent of the vote against Democrat Helen Boosalis, former Mayor of Lincoln, prevailed. She was the first woman to hold this office. In addition, she was the first woman to be elected as a Republican in a governorship. Their term of office was uneventful. In 1990, she was defeated in the gubernatorial election the Democrats Ben Nelson.

After the end of their term Orr remained politically active. She was a member of a working committee of the U.S. Department of Agriculture and a member of the Advisory Board by President George W. Bush. She is married to Bill Orr, with whom she has two children.
