Kazi Nazrul Islam

Kazi Nazrul Islam ( Bengali: কাজী নজরুল ইসলাম, Kaji Najrul Islām; born May 24, 1899 in Churulia, Bengal; † August 29, 1976 in Dhaka, Bangladesh) was a Bengali poet. He is considered the national poet of Bangladesh.

Kazi Nazrul Islam is the son of Kazi Faqir Ahmad († 1908) and his wife Zaheda Khatun († 1928) and comes from a village in Bengal Bardhaman district. In 1917 he enrolled at the 49th Bengal Regiment of the Indian colonial army, which did not come to combat. His will to fight also found expression in his first published poem The Autobiography of a Delinquent (May 1919). His seals seemed energetic and urgent and met with a sense of time. Kazi Nazrul Islam was in the time of the campaign of non- cooperation with its ballad-like poems Bidrohi ( Rebel, 1922) and Pralayollas ( cheering on the final downfall, 1922) and the poetry collection Agnibina ( The fire Harp, 1922) and others to have a voice of the Bengali youth. He himself was infected by the revolutionary mood of the independence movement and became politically active against the British colonial power. In many verses, he called for unity of Hindus and Muslims in the anti-colonial struggle against oppression, so that many of his poems were banned, including the poetry collections Previously Banshi ( The poisoned flute, 1924) and Bhangar Gan ( Song of the demolition, 1924). In addition to his revolutionary poetry, he also wrote love poems commercially successful. He wrote the lyrics and music to more than 2,000 songs, including many ghazals in Bengali language. In 1924 he married Pramila Devi.

From about 1930, Kazi Nazrul Islam turned to religious themes in his works. After 1941 he was prevented because of an incurable brain disease ( Pick's disease ) on Writing, published nothing more. In 1960 he was awarded the Padma Bhushan. From 1962 until his death lived Kazi Nazrul Islam withdrawn. After the independence of Bangladesh from Pakistan in 1972, he moved from Kolkata to the new capital Dhaka. In Bangladesh, he received the 1977 Shadhinata Padak and Padak Ekushey, the highest civilian Merit Bangladesh and official recognition as a national poet of Bangladesh. His grave is located next to a mosque on the campus of the University of Dhaka.
