Kediet Ijill, also Kediet ej Jill, with a height of 915 meters the highest mountain in Mauritania. In the plains east of the city Kediet Ijill Zouérat, the capital of Tiris Zemmour administrative unit is located. To the west lies F'dérik. The rocks have a blue-gray color because the rock contains various iron oxides such as magnetite.

Initial plans in the 1930s to exploit the iron ore deposits in the former French West Africa, prevented the Second World War. In 1963 the first in the now independent Mauritania with the iron ore mining. For the removal of the ore, the 700 km long railway line Nouadhibou - M'Haoudat was built at the port city of Nouadhibou.

The iron deposits of Kediet Ijill affect the earth's magnetic field in the area and thus the rash of compass needles.
