Ķegums

Ķegums ( German Keggum ) is a Latvian city on the Daugava River, 45 kilometers southeast of Riga.

History

The village was founded since 1936 with the construction of the hydropower plant. The name -giving Good Ķegums (German Rautenfeld ), and local hazardous rapids drowned while in the waters of the Daugava. A total of approximately 13 km ² floor area were flooded by the reservoir of the power plant. The construction work was completed by a Swedish company until 1940. In 1944, the dam was blown up during the retreat of the German army, but built up again in 1947 and enlarged.

The town received city rights in 1991.

Sports

In Ķegums is the motorcycle race track " zelta Zirgs " ( German " Golden Horse " ), where national and international races take place. Ķegums was frequently host the Latvian Sidecar Motocross World Championship as well as the Latvian Motocross Grand Prix.

Ķeguma novads

In 2002, the town merged with two rural communities to an administrative district. Of 2009 was added in another community. 2010, reported 6306 inhabitants.
