Kehra

Kehra ( German Kedder ) is a small town in northern Estonia.

Location

Kehra located in Harju County. The city belongs administratively to the rural community Anija. It is located on Jagala River.

History

Kehra was first mentioned in documents in 1241 in Liber Census Daniæ. In the 1620/30er years the manor of Kedder ( Kehra mõis ) was built on an old watering hole.

The actual beginning of the settlement depends on the construction of the railway line from Reval (now Tallinn) to Narva together in the 19th century. 1876 ​​received Kedder own railway station and grew rapidly. 1938 a paper mill was founded, accelerating the economic recovery. The Soviet occupation they built mainly in the 1950s and 1960s continued.

1945 Kehra was granted the status of a large village ( alevik ). 1993, and received its charter.

Attractions

Worth seeing is the historical manor of Kehra. The present building was built in the 1820s by the then German Baltic owner Friedrich August von Maydell as early neoclassical timber. In the 19th century the estate went to his buildings as a donation to the ownership of the Estonian Agricultural Association ( Eestimaa Põllumajanduse Selts ) above.
