Calamine ( French La Calamine ) is a municipality in the Belgian province of East Belgium Liege with 10,874 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2012). Calamine is one of the nine municipalities of the German-speaking Community in Belgium. The former German name for Calamine was Altenberg. The church now belongs to the Euregio Meuse -Rhine.

Geography

The municipality consists of the villages of La Calamine Hergenrath, Calamine (formerly Altenberg or Neutral Moresnet ) and Neu-Moresnet (formerly Prussian Moresnet ). It extends in the triangle of Belgium - Netherlands - Germany in the Valley of Göhl on an area of ​​approximately 18.12 km ². The municipality is located in close proximity to Vaals (NL ) in the north, Aachen ( D ) in the northwest, Raeren (B ) to the west, Lontzen (B ) in the south and Plombières / Bleyberg (B ) in the east. History

History of the town of La Calamine

Etymology
