Turtle in Kelonia
Kelonia on sea turtles is a specialized aquarium and observation station in the municipality of Saint -Leu in the northwest of the French island of Réunion in the Indian Ocean. It was established in 2006 on the basis of a former turtle farm.
Kelonia takes part in various scientific activities for the observation of sea turtles, including to migration studies, genetics and population monitoring. It also has a turtle infirmary.
Many sea turtles that were released by Kelonia are equipped with Argos - GPS transmitters, and their migration routes can be followed via Internet.
Species
Focus is on sea turtles of the Indian Ocean sea species: Chelonia mydas, Hawksbill Turtle ( Eretmochelys imbricata ), loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta), olive ridley turtle ( Lepidochelys olivacea ) and leatherback turtle ( Dermochelys coriacea )
