Ken Aston

Ken Aston ( born September 1, 1915 in Colchester, † 23 October 2001 in Ilford ) was an English football referee. He is best known for the invention of yellow or red cards together with Rudolf Kreitlein. In addition, he introduced the yellow flags the linesman and wore one of the first black referee uniform in its current form.

The yellow and red cards "invented" Aston during the Football World Cup 1966, where he was chairman of the FIFA Referees Committee. In the quarter- final between England and Argentina, the Argentine Antonio Rattin was excluded, but understood the decision of the arbitrator (or pretended not to have understood the decision). Next Aston complained that the audience would often not noticed warnings or disclaimers.
