The Kenan Memorial Stadium is the stadium of the University of North Carolina in the town of Chapel Hill in North Carolina, USA. The 60,000 -seat arena is primarily used for American football games of the North Carolina Tar Heels.

History

When in 1925 the old venue Emerson Field in 1916 with 2,400 seats was no longer sufficient for growing audiences; it was decided to build a larger stadium. A former graduate of the University, William R. Kenan Jr., learned of the plans and donated a large sum, and allowed the construction of the stadium and the adjacent sports hall Fieldhouse. He dedicated the stadium to his parents William R. Kenan and Mary Hargrave Kenan. Thus began in November 1926, the work on the sports venue and ended in August 1927. The official opening of the plant with 24,000 seats was at the game on November 12, 1927, the North Carolina Tar Heels against the Davidson College ( 27-0 ) instead.

After a further donation of U.S. $ 1 million from William R. Kenan Jr. in 1963, the capacity of the stadium has been doubled to 48,000 places. The next expansion took place in 1979, bringing 2,000 additional seats. Again, 2,000 new seats were added in the expansion in the years 1987 and 1988; furthermore the old press box was replaced. The hitherto most extensive remodeling ran over three years ( 1995-1998). Biggest change was the establishment of the West Stand with 8,000 seats; which the stadium until today owes its horseshoe shape. Thus, the capacity rose to the still valid number of 60,000 seats. In 2003, the stadium received a modern video scoreboard and 2007 electronic advertising boards.

A further extension is provided since 2006 and in October 2009 the new plans were presented. This project has been postponed due to the poor economy until at least 2010 or 2011. The main part of the extension is the east side; to be closed with a grandstand with 3,230 seats. This is also the old sports hall will be demolished. The cost of construction will be calculated at 70 to 85 million U.S. dollars. The Tribune called The Blue Zone will have 1,986 seats right on the pitch. On the fourth floor of the rank 924 business seats will be available in a VIP area. The fifth floor then are 20 lodges, each with 16 squares (a total of 320 seats ). The business seats are to be had at a price 1500-2500 U.S. $ per season. The price for a box is then U.S. $ 50,000 per year.
