Kenji Tsuruta

Kenji Tsuruta (Japanese鹤 田 谦 二, Kenji Tsuruta, * 1961 in the Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan) is a Japanese manga artist, illustrator and character designer.

Career and style

Before his debut appeared as a professional manga artist, drew Tsuruta dōjinshi and worked as an assistant for several manga artist. His first manga he finally published in 1986 with the short story Hirokute Suteki na Uchū Janai ka (広くてすてきな宇宙じゃないか, dt " It's a big, wonderful universe, is not it ?"). This was awarded a prize from the Kodansha publishing house and was also the first in a series of short stories that were laid in the anthology Spirit of Wonder later. The Spirit of Wonder stories published until 1995 in the manga magazine Morning and Afternoon, were filmed in an anime movie and an OVA, and translated into several languages.

In the following years Tsuruta developed a graphically very detailed drawing style and drew only a few manga. His Artbooks Hydrogen and Eternal, however, were great successes and the anime series Abenobashi Maho Shôtengai, for which he designed the character design and a corresponding manga series featured, among anime fans reached cult status. His 2003 published manga Forget- me-not, the episodes from the everyday life of a young Japanese detective describes in Venice, had in Japan within a very short time to be reprinted and published, among others, also in France and Germany.

Tsurutas works are mostly attributable to the science fiction genre, and are heavily influenced by writers such as Jules Verne and HG Wells affected. The manga artist Hoshino Yukinobu (including 2001 Ya Monogatari ), who is considered one of the leading in the science fiction field, and Tetsuya Chiba ( Ashita no Joe ) had a great influence on Tsuruta.

For his outstanding artistic contribution Tsuruta won in both 2000 and 2001 Seiun Award for science fiction literature.

He also works as an illustrator and drew among others, the cover for the Japanese novelization of the publisher Tōkyō Sōgensha of Captain Future, or the expenses of the SF Magazine 2000 vintage, as well as illustrations for Romanreiehn how Shinji Kajios Emanon for which he also drew the manga adaptation, Miyuki Miyabes Brave Story or Hiroshi Mori Sky crawlers.
