The Kennedy Highway is a highway in Queensland, Australia. It runs over a length of 1163 km from Cairns in the north- east Queensland's southwest towards to Boulia in the Midwest of the country. The first section up to the branch of the Gulf Developmental Road is part of the National Highway 1, which circles the entire Australian continent.
Course
Smithfield - Forty Mile Scrub National Park
The Kennedy Highway branches in Smithfield, a suburb about twelve kilometers north of the center of Cairns, from the Captain Cook Highway, and is there marked as Highway 1. It winds its way first to the hill country west of Cairns to Kuranda and on to Mareeba. From Mareeba from it extends further south through the Atherton Tablelands and passes the towns of Atherton, Ravenshoe and Mount Garnet.
After the Kennedy Highway has reached the Forty Mile Scrub National Park about 45 kilometers south of Mount Garnet, branches off of Highway 1 as the Gulf Developmental Road to the west and leads to Normanton.
Forty Mile Scrub National Park - Hughenden
The Kennedy Highway continues in a south-westerly direction, but is referred to by this diversion when Kennedy Developmental Road ( State Route 62).
In Lynd Junction of Gregory Highway from Charters Towers crosses coming the Kennedy Developmental Road, which leads to Hughenden further south. In Hughenden Flinders Highway, which runs from Townsville to Cloncurry crosses.
Hughenden - Boulia
From Hughenden from the Kennedy Developmental Road then continues in a south-westerly direction over 214 km to Winton, where it crosses the Landsborough Highway.
The last part of the Kennedy Developmental Road leading from Winton in from the west over 362 km to Boulia, where the road as Donohue Highway has a continuation of the Northern Territory. This last section of the Kennedy Developmental Road - also known as Min Min Way - is also the first section of the Outback Highway.
