Kenneth Lee Pike

Kenneth Lee Pike ( June 9, 1912 in Woodstock, Connecticut, † 31 December 2000) was an American linguist and anthropologist. He became famous for his theory of Tagmemik and for the terms ' emic ' vs. ' etic ', which he influenced. From 1947 to 1979 he was President of SIL International. In addition, he has the plan language Kalaba -X designed as an aid for the theory and practice of translation. Pike was the first president of global SIL International (1942-1979), after William Cameron Townsend was ready to give up the responsibility.

Pike was a committed Christian and strove in his works partly about delivering a justification for missionary activities within linguistics and anthropology. He was a member of the Christian Peace Conference and participants of the II Allchristlichen Peace Convocation in 1964 in Prague, in the Advisory Committee, he got himself elected. He was nominated for his work fifteen consecutive years (1982-1996) for the Nobel Peace Prize, although he never received.
