Kenneth Stanley Reightler junior ( born March 24, 1951, the Naval Air Station Patuxent River, Maryland, USA ) is a former American astronaut.

Reightler 1973 received a bachelor's degree in aeronautics and aerospace engineering from the United States Naval Academy in 1984 and a master's degree in aeronautical engineering from the Naval Postgraduate School and an additional master's degree in Systems Management from the University of Southern California.

In August 1974 Reightler completed his training as a naval aviator in the United States Navy. After deployments in Florida, to Iceland and Sicily, he went through training as a test pilot at the U.S. Naval Test Pilot School in Maryland. From 1978 he worked as a test pilot and as an instructor for test pilots. In June 1981, he was transferred to the aircraft carrier USS Dwight D. Eisenhower in the Mediterranean. In March 1985, he returned to the U.S. Naval Test Pilot School back as a senior instructor for the pilot.

Astronauts activity

After an unsuccessful bid for the eleventh astronaut group in June 1987 Reightler was selected by NASA as an astronaut candidate with the twelfth group. He was head of the Space Station Branch of the Astronaut Office, Head of Mission Support, conducting connection spokesman ( CAPCOM ), Chief Astronaut for the development of flight software and computer systems, representative of the Department of Flight Crew Operations in the Program Requirements Control Board, weather coordinator for space shuttle launches and landings and the astronaut office representative for take-offs, landings and crashes start.

STS -48

On September 12, 1991 when Reightler as a pilot of the space shuttle Discovery for the first time into space. In this five- day mission, the UARS satellite was exposed to research the upper atmosphere. The 6.5 -tonne satellite led by one of the most detailed studies of the Earth's atmosphere, including the ozone layer.

STS -60

February 3, 1994 Reightler started again as a pilot of the space shuttle Discovery into space. A special feature of this flight was that for the first time a Russian cosmonaut Sergei Krikalev flew with an American spaceship. The Wake Shield Facility and the Spacehab module were the main payloads on board.

In July 1995 Reightler retired from NASA and joined as Vice President of Lockheed -Martin, and since September 2001 he has been senior vice president.

Kenneth Reightler is married and has two children.
