Kentucky Thoroughblades

The Kentucky Thoroughblades were an American ice hockey franchise in the American Hockey League in Lexington, Kentucky. They played from 1996 to 2001 in Rupp Center. The team was moved to the 2000 /01 season to Cleveland, Ohio and renamed the Cleveland Barons.

History

The brief history of Thoroughblades began in 1996 with the founding of the team and its entry into the American Hockey League, then in addition to the International Hockey League and the National Hockey League behind the strongest North American Hockey League. As the owner of the team, the Kentucky Hockey Associates Inc. acted. Already in the first year of existence, the team reached the first round of the playoffs. This was achieved in the following four years, and you could even win the division title in the regular season for the seasons 1999/ 00 and 2000/ 01. The playoffs were never crowned for the Thoroughblades of success. In three of the five years, it failed in the first round where mostly proved to the Hershey Bears to a big hurdle.

During its existence, the Thoroughblades served as a farm team of the NHL team San Jose Sharks, causing some well-known players, such as the later NHL Awards winner Jonathan Cheechoo, Evgeni Nabokov and Miikka Kiprusoff, members of the team were. In 2001 the team was bought by the owners of the Sharks and moved to Cleveland.
