Kenz-Küstrow

Kenz - Küstrow is a municipality in the west of the district Vorpommern - Rügen. The municipality is located southeast of Barth.

Geography and transport

Kenz - Küstrow is located about four kilometers south of Barth. The north- east of the district borders the Grabow, a part of the Darß- Zingster Bodden chain. The Bodden coast is mainly in the south flat and marshy. Here ends the Zipker creek in the bay, which forms the southern boundary of the municipality. The terrain heights will then embark on running in a north-south direction at ridge Küstrow and Rubitz to over thirty meters. In the north of the ridge extends almost to the Bodden coast.

South of the village the main road runs 105 ( Rostock- Stralsund ). Through the district of the municipality of the Kenz Darßbahn runs.

History

Küstrow and Dabitz first time in 1280, Kenz was first mentioned in 1313 and Rubitz the first time in 1317 in a document. The places are of Slavic origin. Until 1325 Kenz belonged to the Principality of Rügen, came with the extinction of the royal house of the Duchy of Pomerania and 1648 Swedish Pomerania.

With the apparition of Mary Pomerana miraculosa and Kenzer miracle fountain Kenz was a place of pilgrimage for 1395. Here sought in 1405 also duke Barnim VI. vain cure of the plague and was buried of Pomerania - Wolgast in Kenz. The wooden shrine ( cenotaph ) at St. Mary's Church houses the life-size figure of the Duke. With the Reformation, the meaning declined by Kenz. End of the 18th century, however, the well was rediscovered and Kenz developed into one of the most important spas in Western Pomerania.

After the transfer of Swedish Pomerania to Prussia, and the assignment to the Province of Pomerania in 1815 the cure went back and soon came to a complete standstill. In November 1872, the Baltic Sea storm flood flooded in 1872 large parts of the town.

The villages in the municipality were until 1952 part of the district Pommern -Barth and belonged then to 1994 to the circle Ribnitz Damgarten in the district of Rostock.

Until 1 January 2005, the municipality was part of the Office Barth country and has since been part of the Office Barth. The community was formed by the merger of the municipalities Kenz and Küstrow on 31 December 1999.
