Kep Province

City

Kep (Khmer: កែប; transcription: Kêb; IPA: [ ka ː EP] ) is a city in Cambodia with the status of a province. In 2008 it had 35 753 inhabitants. It is divided into two administrative districts:

  • Damnak Chang'aeur
  • Kep

Kep has a direct access to the Gulf of Thailand and is one of the most famous coastal cities of Cambodia. Kep is just a few kilometers west of the border with Vietnam. A well- developed route connects the town with Kampot, the capital city of the surrounding province of the same name.

History

For a long time the most important seaside resort of Kep in the country. Many of the colonial buildings were destroyed during the reign of the Khmer Rouge. Through the re- emergence of tourism in Cambodia, the city slowly blooms again.
