Chlordecone is a chemical compound from the group of organochlorine compounds and ketones. Technically pure chlordecone contains about 5% water and up to 0.1% hexachlorocyclopentadiene.

Properties

Chlordecone in the environment is very stable with a half-life of several years.

Use

Chlordecone was used as an insecticide and as an intermediate for the preparation of the insecticide Kelevan. It was introduced in 1958 as Ketonanalogon of mirex under the name Kepone and used 1966-1975 in the U.S. as an insecticide against ants and cockroaches. In 1975, the use in the U.S. was banned in 2009 and it was included in the Stockholm Convention the world banned substances. In 1979 there was a report from the French physician Dominique Belpomme on the banana plantations in Martinique and Guadeloupe by the use of an above-average number of prostate cancer cases and birth defects in newborn children.
