Keratometer

The Ophthalmometer (also keratometer ) is an instrument for measuring the surface curvature of the cornea (Latin cornea) of the eye, and the determination of the cornea curves ( keratometry ). In 1851, developed by Hermann von Helmholtz gauge permits the gauging of the virtual image and thus a conclusion on the curvature of the reflecting surface. Here an illuminated object is placed at a known distance and observed the reflection of the cornea.

This measurement method is currently mainly in the optical industry in the fitting of contact lenses application, the keratometer is increasingly being replaced by its further development, the video keratometer ( ( Video ) Keratograf ).
