Kerens is a city in Navarro County in the U.S. state of Texas in the United States.

Geography

The city is located in the central northeast Texas, at the intersection of Highways 31 and 309, as well as the Farm Roads 667 and 3096, 22 km east of Corsicana and has a total area of 6.0 km ² without significant water surface.

History

The town was founded in 1881 as the St. Louis Southwestern Railway of Texas moved its tracks by the County. It was named after the judge RC Kerens of St. Louis.

Demographic data

According to the census of 2000, there were 1,681 people in 682 households and 448 families. The population density was 278.6 inhabitants per km ². The racial the population was composed of 70.14 % White, 22.13 % African American, 0.48 % Native American, 0.06 % Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander residents from the and 5.77 % from other ethnic groups. Approximately 1.43% were of mixed descent, and 7.61 % of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 682 households 33.0 % had children under the age of 18 living with them. 48.8 % were married couples living together. 13.5 % were single mothers and 34.2% were non-families. 31.8 % of all households were single-person households, and 20.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.46 and the average family size amounted to 3.13.

28.1% of the population were under 18 years old, 7.6 % from 18 to 24, 26.5% 25-44, 19.7% from 45 to 64, and 18.1 % who were 65 years or older. The average age was 36 years. For every 100 females of all ages were 83.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, 79.8 males.

The median income for a household was $ 27,969, and the median income for a family $ 36,719. Males have a median income of $ 26,683 versus $ 21,600 for females. The per capita income was $ 13,000. 19.5 % of the population and 13.3 % of families are below the poverty line. Of which 23.8 % have children under the age of 18 and 18.9 % of those 65 or older.
