Keresan languages

Keres is a group of seven related language varieties that are common in the U.S. state of New Mexico, where they are spoken by Pueblo Indians. The spokesman of the individual dialects are able to understand the speaker of a neighboring dialect. Is most widespread today the Western Keres, which is still dominated by approximately 3400 speakers. However, there are considerable differences between the dialects of the Western and Eastern group. It is not so far succeeded in proving relationships to other languages.

Possible relationships

Keres is an isolated language. Assumptions that links to the Sioux languages ​​, the Caddo languages, the Iroquois languages ​​or to Wichita might exist, have so far proved unfounded.
