Kerrville is the capital and the county seat ( county seat ) of the Kerr County in the U.S. state of Texas in the United States.

Geography

The city is located in south-central Texas, 140 kilometers west of Austin, 94 km north- west of San Antonio on Interstate 10 as well as the intersection of Highways 16 and 27 and has a total area of 43.9 km ², of which 0.6 km ² water surface is.

History

The area was settled as early as 10,000 years ago. The first European settlers were successful as a shingle maker.

Kerrville is named after James Kerr, a major, who took part in the Texas Revolution. Today the place is known for the annual Kerrville Folk Festival and the Schreiner University, a private university of the seven liberal arts. Kerrville has been to a local trade center, the middle and upper portion of the Hill Country supplied in the 1840s. Joshua D. Brown was one of the earliest shingle makers in this field. He led several families in an exploration of the Guadalupe Valley.

Demographic data

According to the census of 2000, there were 20,425 people in 8,563 households and 5,411 families. The population density was 471.9 inhabitants per km ². The racial the population was composed of 85.89 % White, 2.99 % African American, 0.55 % Native American, 0.57 % Asian, 0.08 % Pacific Islander residents from the and 8.20 % from other ethnic groups. Approximately 1.73% were of mixed descent, and 22.73 % of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 8,563 households, 22.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them. 49.8 % were married couples living together. 10.2% were single mothers and 36.8 % were non-families. 33.1 % of all households were single-person households, and 19.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.21 and the average family size was 2.79 persons.

21% of the population were under 18 years old, 8 % from 18 to 24, 21.3% 25-44, 20.4% from 45 to 64, and 29.3% who were 65 years or older. The average age was 45 years. For every 100 females of all ages were 87.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, 83.0 males.

The median income for a household was $ 32,085, and the median income for a family $ 38,979. Males have a median income of $ 27,555 versus $ 19,923 for females. The per capita income was $ 20,193. 15.6 % of the population and 11.7 % of families are below the poverty line. Of which 25.8 % have children under the age of 18 and 7.8 % of those 65 or older.
