Kesennuma, Miyagi

Kesennuma (Japanese気 仙 沼 市, -shi ) is a city in Miyagi Prefecture on Honshu, the main island of Japan.

Geography

Kesennuma is located north of Sendai and southeast of Morioka on the Pacific Ocean.

History

On 1 October 2009 Motoyoshi was incorporated from the Motoyoshi -gun.

Due to the Tohoku Earthquake of 2011 and the subsequent tsunami prevailed in many parts of the city fires and about one- third of the area was under water. 10,000 people had to be evacuated to emergency shelters. Until May 20, 930 dead and 604 missing persons were counted.

Even two years after the day of the tsunami, March 11, 2011 the reconstruction and development of the administrative and economic conditions in Kesenuma were still future tasks. By 2014, buildings such as a new pier will be completed for deep sea fishing.
