Kesselbrink

The Kesselbrink is a central place in the city of Bielefeld. It is located in the northeast of the city center, close to the Jahn place.

History

Situated in the eastern city center about 2 acres of space initially served as cattle pasture. Each member of citizenship was required to hold at least one animal in order to obtain manure for crop production. Thus arose the present name, derived from Köttelbrink. Initial plans for construction of the square there were in the 1920s. A library, a house of education, arts and welfare were planned, due to the onset of the economic crisis but not realized. Instead, the place of unemployment has been turned into a park ( 1926).

In the Nazi era, the square was used as a parade ground. In the years 1941 and 1942 Jews, homosexuals and other undesirable by the Nazis individuals were collected in the Kyffhaeuser restaurant, before being deported. Today, a memorial plaque at the main station especially to the victims.

After the war, the place was long unpaved parking lot. 1960/61, has started the construction of the then largest underground car park of Germany and the building of the police headquarters. After about five years to build the underground car park and from April 1965 it erected a central bus station for the then well-developed intercity bus service could be used. Of the 17 bus platforms, among others drove buses to Osnabrueck, Muenster, Detmold and Paderborn. Planning and redesign

In the context of Agenda 21 and the Bielefeld funding urban redevelopment West of the square was redesigned for 1.6 million euros for the appreciation of the place and the renovation of dilapidated underground parking were provided. Skatepark
