Kessinger laid reprints of rare, out of print or copyright free books. It was founded in 1988 in Whitefish, Montana. The data of the initial publication of the title is generally prior to 1923, it can be assumed that that the books are copyright free in the United States. Kessinger often used by Google Books scanned titles and proposes new ISBN for the scanned books. Kessinger also publishes print-on- demand titles. In 2009, the publisher offered to over 190,000 titles.

Some scientists complain that the publishing Copy fraud, since so books that are actually legitimate and permanent public domain, are again occupied by a copyright.
