Ketose

Ketoses ( polyhydroxyketones ) is the chemical name for a structure type of sugar.

Ketoses are monosaccharides (carbohydrates ) and carry the carbonyl group ( carbon-oxygen double bond, C = O ) at the second carbon atom of the carbon chain, and not, as in the first aldoses at the terminal carbon atom. The ketoses are therefore representative of the substance group of ketones. The most common ketose is D- fructose. Ketoses can be caused by the oxidation of a polyhydric alcohol at a non-terminal carbon atom.

List of ketoses

  • Ketotriose ( Triulose ): dihydroxyacetone
  • Ketotetrose ( Tetrulose ): Erythrulose
  • Ketopentoses ( Pentulose ): ribulose, xylulose
  • Ketohexoses ( hexulose ): psicose, fructose, sorbose, tagatose
