Ketoy

Ketoi (Russian Кетой ;计 吐 夷 岛, Ketoi -tō jap ) is an uninhabited volcanic island in the central area of the Kuril Islands, about 19 kilometers northwest of the island Simuschir located. The island belongs administratively to the Russian Sakhalin Oblast. The island is roughly circular with a diameter of about 12 km and an area of ​​73 km ².

The Northeast Ketois is the edge of a Pleistocene caldera formed with a diameter of 5 kilometers. The highest point of the island with 1172 feet above the sea is a stratovolcano in the northwest, which is intersected by a Horst -Graben structure. The center of the island is occupied by a 1.5 km by measuring the explosion crater, where a freshwater lake has formed.

All eruptions in historical times had their origin from the 990 meter high Pallas Peak, one composed of andesite cone, in its 550 -meter diameter crater, a turquoise lake lies. A five- kilometer-long lava flow of Pallas Peak reached the coast in the south east of the island. Eruptions are known from the years 1843 to 1846, 1924 and 1960. 1981 very active fumaroles were observed.
