Kettering is a city in Greene County and Montgomery County in the U.S. state of Ohio. It is a suburb of nearby Dayton. According to the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 57 502 inhabitants.
Geography
It is the largest suburb of the metropolitan area of Dayton. According to the United States Census Bureau, it covers an area of 48.4 square kilometers.
The city is one of the few that exceed a Countygrenze. Only a very small part of the east of the city is located in Greene County, the vast majority is located in Montgomery County. The city is bordered to the north by Dayton, Riverside and Oakwood. In the west it is bounded by Carrollton and Moraine, in the south of Centerville and Washington Township and east of Beaver Creek and Sugar Creek Township.
History
The first settlers on the territory of today Kettering was John Patterson, who built his log cabin here in 1789. It was not until 1841, when the population had so far grown to a private Township, to establish the Van Buren Township. The Township existed more than 100 years in this form.
In November 1952, the residents of Van Buren townships confirmed the establishment of a separate community in the area of the township. The new municipality was after her outstanding citizen, Charles F. Kettering, inventor of the electric ignition for internal combustion engines, named. Kettering lived here from 1914 until his death in 1958.
In 1955, an extraordinary census in Kettering was held, which resulted in a classification of the population of 38.118. This led on July 24, 1955 survey of the municipality of the City. The city constitution came on 1 January 1956 in force. The city council consists of seven members, it is composed of one elected representative of the four municipalities, two additional elected representatives and the mayor.

The population chain ring consisted of 95.23 % White, 1.66 % African American, 0.18 % Native American, 1.38% Asian, 0.02 % Pacific Islander, 0.33 % reported other races to belong and 1.19 % from two or more races. 1.11 % of the population to be Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Residents Ketterings distributed to 25,657 households out of which 26.9 % were living in children under 18 years. 48.7 % married couples living together, 9.5 % had a female householder with no husband present, and 38.7 % were non-families. 33.4 % of households were made up of individuals and someone lived in 12.7 % of all households aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.22 and the average family size is 2.85 people.
The population was spread out with 22.5 % under the, 7.5 % 18 -24- year-old, 29.4 % 25 -44- year-old, 22.3% 45-64 year olds and 18.3 % under the age of 65 years or more. The average age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 90.5 males. In the over -18s accounted for 100 women 86.7 males.
The median household income in Kettering was 45 051 U.S. dollars, and the median family income reached the level of 55 849 U.S. dollars. The average income of men was 41,558 U.S. dollars, compared to 28 921 U.S. dollars for women. The per capita income amounted to 27 009 U.S. dollars. 3.2 % of the population and 4.6 % of families were below the poverty line, including 5.3 % of those affected and 3.6 % of those age 65 or over.
